Common questions
Everything you might want to know before reaching out.
01Do you take my insurance?
Cocoon Therapy is out of network. We don't bill insurance directly, and we don't bill Medicare or Medicaid. Many plans with out-of-network benefits reimburse part of a session. Your plan decides what it pays.
02What is a superbill, and how do I use it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt you can send to your plan to ask for reimbursement. It carries a diagnosis code, which your insurer sees. We can't promise your plan will reimburse.
03What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate of what care will cost before you start. We give you one in writing. If a bill comes in $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
04How much does it cost, and how do fees work?
You get the fee in writing before we begin. The How fees work page explains paying by card, receipts for reimbursement and the written estimate.
05Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Yes. Health savings and flexible spending cards work like any other card. A superbill can help if your plan asks for one.
06What happens in the first session?
We talk about the past weeks and months, how you're sleeping and eating, who is helping at home, and what you hope this time can be. You don't have to tell the whole story at once, and you can bring the baby.
07How often will we meet, and for how long?
Most sessions are fifty minutes, and we usually begin weekly. Dr. Newsome sets the pace with you, and there is no set number of sessions.
08Are you licensed where I live?
Dr. Newsome is licensed in California. For a video session you need to be in California when we meet. If you're elsewhere, we can talk about what is possible.
09What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time. If you are in danger, call 911. The National Maternal Mental Health Hotline answers by call or text at 1‑833‑TLC‑MAMA. The Crisis and resources page has more.
10What stays private, and what are the limits?
What you say in sessions is private. The limits are set by law: serious danger to yourself or someone else, and concern about a child's safety. Dr. Newsome explains them in your first session.
11Can my partner or my baby come to a session?
Yes. You decide who comes and when. The Partners and family page explains how partner sessions work, and a baby is welcome in the room.
12What is your cancellation policy?
Please give 24 hours' notice to cancel. A later cancellation or a missed session is charged the session fee. Emergencies, like a sick baby, are handled case by case.
